g8-01. How to Make Good Choices

如何做出正确的选择

Every day, we make many choices. Some are small, like what to eat for breakfast. Some are big, like which school to attend or what career to follow. The choices we make shape our future. But how can we make good choices? First, we need to think carefully. Do not rush into a decision. Take time to consider all the options. Imagine the possible results of each choice. Ask yourself, "Will this choice make my life better?" Second, we should listen to advice from people we trust. Our parents, teachers, and friends often see things we do not. Their advice can help us see clearly. However, we should not just follow others. We need to think for ourselves. Third, we need to know our values. What is important to us? Is it family, friendship, knowledge, or something else? When we know our values, our choices become clearer. Fourth, we should not be afraid of mistakes. Sometimes we make wrong choices. That is OK. We can learn from them. Mistakes are great teachers. They help us make better choices next time. Fifth, we should be brave. Sometimes the right choice is not the easy one. We may have to give up something we like. We may have to work harder. But in the end, we will be proud of ourselves. I remember when I had to choose between joining the school basketball team and the music club. Both had tryouts on the same day. I loved both. It was a hard choice. I talked with my parents and teachers. In the end, I chose music. I am glad I did. I learned to play the guitar. Now I can play for my family and friends. Making choices is not always easy. But with careful thought, good advice, and a brave heart, we can make choices we will not regret. Life is a series of choices. Make each one count.

g8-02. The Importance of Family Time

家庭时光的重要性

In our busy modern life, many families spend less and less time together. Parents are busy with work. Children are busy with school and homework. Everyone has a mobile phone. Even when the family sits together at dinner, each person is looking at their own screen. This is a sad situation. Family time is very important. It is during these times that we build strong relationships with the people we love most. Family time does not need to be expensive or fancy. It can be as simple as eating dinner together. It can be playing a board game. It can be taking a walk after dinner. It can be cooking a meal together. What matters is that we are together, talking, laughing, and sharing our lives. In our family, we have a special tradition. Every Sunday evening, we have family time. We turn off all the phones and the TV. We sit around the table. Sometimes we play card games. Sometimes we just talk. Each family member shares something from their week. My father tells us about his work. My mother shares something interesting she read. I share stories from school. My brother shows us his drawings. These moments are precious. They make our family bond stronger. They give us memories we will keep forever. Studies have shown that children who spend more time with their families do better in school. They are also happier and healthier. So let us make time for our families. Put down your phone. Look at the people you love. Talk to them. Listen to them. The time we spend with family is the most valuable time of all.

g8-03. The Impact of Social Media

社交媒体的影响

Social media has changed the way we communicate and get information. Apps like WeChat, Douyin, and Weibo are part of daily life for many teenagers. There are benefits. We can stay in touch with friends and family easily. We can learn new skills from educational videos. We can share our creativity with the world. However, social media also has risks. Some students spend hours scrolling without realizing how much time has passed. This affects their sleep and study. Online comments can be hurtful. Some people compare their lives with others and feel unhappy. Fake news spreads quickly on social media. Last year, I saw a rumor about our school on a group chat. Many students believed it and panicked. Later, the school clarified that it was false. This taught me to check information before sharing it. I now set a daily limit of one hour for social media. I turn off notifications during study time. I follow accounts that inspire me, not those that make me anxious. Social media is a tool. How we use it depends on us. We should enjoy its benefits while protecting our time, privacy, and mental health.

g8-04. Cultural Exchange Program

文化交流项目

Last spring, our school started a cultural exchange program with a school in Australia. Ten students from each country spent two weeks visiting each other's schools and families. I was lucky to be selected. When the Australian students arrived, I was their host. I showed them around our city and introduced them to Chinese food. They tried dumplings, hot pot, and bubble tea for the first time. Some of them used chopsticks for the first time too. We laughed a lot when they dropped food on the table. In return, they taught us Australian slang and showed us photos of kangaroos and the Sydney Opera House. During class, we worked on a joint project about environmental protection. We discovered that students in both countries care about the same issues. Plastic waste, air pollution, and saving energy were common concerns. We presented our ideas together at the closing ceremony. Two months later, I flew to Australia for the return visit. I stayed with a family in Melbourne. Everything was different but exciting. The sky was incredibly blue. People were friendly and relaxed. I learned that despite different languages and customs, teenagers everywhere share similar dreams and worries. This experience opened my eyes to the world. I want to study harder in English and visit more countries in the future.
